As a result of some rumors in today's tabloid press, I have been able in the last few minutes to exclusively confirm that Randy Price will indeed be joining WCVB to co-anchor the EyeOpener morning program with Bianca de la Garza. The announcement is being made a few minutes from now, and I caught Randy on his cellphone a matter of moments ago (on his way to 5 HQ in Needham), when he was able to confirm the news to me.
The news was embargoed until tomorrow, but this speculative Herald leak has forced the station to bump up its press release, which I will post shortly.
Randy has also very graciously agreed to give his VERY FIRST interview to BTVN (and me specifically) and that will be made available as soon as we possibly can.
As a side note, I would very much appreciate if once the interview is completed and posted, you our valued members could link to it on as many relevant sites and blogs as possible, since it is unlikely that the Herald and the Globe will have any meaningful coverage until at least Thursday and the exposure would be most welcome.
Thanks - and please discuss!

Some kind soul who shall remains anonymous has passed along the press release just issued by GM Bill Fine. It reads: RANDY PRICE JOINS NEWSCENTER 5 TEAM NAMED CO-ANCHOR OF EYEOPENER NEWSCAST STARTING JUNE 8 at 5AM PRICE: “I’M ECSTATIC TO BECOME PART OF A TEAM WITH A LEGACY FOR SERVING VIEWERS LIKE NO OTHER” Boston -- Randy Price has been named morning anchor and reporter at WCVB-TV/DT Channel 5 and TheBostonChannel.com. President and General Manager Bill Fine made the announcement to staff today. One of the most respected journalists in broadcast television, Price will begin co-anchoring the EyeOpener newscast with Bianca de la Garza Monday, June 8. He will also contribute to breaking news and major event coverage for WCVB, the market’s news leader. Fine said, “Randy is the consummate journalist -- dependable, experienced, and universally respected. As a competitor, I have always admired him and am thrilled he is returning on the air as a member of NewsCenter 5.” Fine continued, "Randy is a great fit for WCVB and NewsCenter 5. Adding him to our already strong team of journalists will further enhance the quality of news we deliver to New England viewers." Price’s distinguished career has included stints as an anchor and reporter at WHDH-TV and WBZ-TV. In his twenty plus years on Boston television, Price has won numerous awards, including a national Edward R. Murrow Award for best newscast, the broadcast industry’s highest honor. He is also well known in New England’s civic and philanthropic communities, regularly volunteering his time to raise funds and awareness for a variety of causes. “WCVB is the gold standard for local broadcast news; it is such an honor for me to join the team. I am ecstatic to become part of one of the most renowned television stations in the country, not only for news and information, but for community service, innovation and the ability to truly make a difference in people’s lives,” said Price. WCVB News Director Andrew Vrees said, “Randy is clearly the best ‘free agent’ in the market. He brings an incredible passion for news, journalistic integrity and a connection with local viewers to the EyeOpener.” On returning to morning television, Price said, “It is absolutely my favorite time to report. I’ve spent more of my career on morning news programs and I love it because it really helps New Englanders’ get their day started. It’s a privilege to be able to have that relationship with the community.” He continued, “The more global we become, the more important the need for our local connections. No one understands that more than WCVB.” Current EyeOpener anchor David Brown will focus on reporting for NewsCenter 5 and TheBostonChannel.com and serve as a fill-in weather anchor. In addition to reporting and anchoring, Brown has a notable background in weather science and is one of the best-known meteorologists in the region. A graduate of Louisiana State University, Price began his broadcast career in college radio and the United States Air Force. He has previously worked at television stations in Bakersfield, California and Toledo, Ohio. Also, as a note of housekeeping, the previous thread on this subject has now been locked for the sake of efficency, so please continue discussions in this one.

Max, please ask Randy about the changes that are ahead for the EyeOpener. I am interested in seeing if they take more of an interactive approach as WBZ and Fox have done.

Well, if you look closely at the press release: Current EyeOpener anchor David Brown will focus on reporting for NewsCenter 5 and TheBostonChannel.com and serve as a fill-in weather anchor. In addition to reporting and anchoring, Brown has a notable background in weather science and is one of the best-known meteorologists in the region.

YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE! I have just posted my exclusive interview with Randy on our front page. You can also hear it here: www.upload-mp3.com/files/43388_snkpg/randy-wcvb.mp3Please forward it to as many places as you can, as I have specifically abided by Channel 5's request to hold off until now, so it would be nice to get maximum exposure.

Great news!! I am thrilled for Randy and know that he and Bianca will be a great team. Some very strange morning TV side stories...David Wade on 4 works opposite his wife Bianca De La Garza on 5....Randy Price ob 5 will face his former 7 co-anchor(1998-2001) Kim Carrigan on 25... Randy got some work to do at 5. 25 is still the station to beat in the AM block. They're #1 from 5 to 9am among all demos. Plus, they'll be adding the 5th hour of local news once Mike and Juliet bid farewell on the 26th...

Actually, Channel 7 is number 1 at 5am, with 25 in 4th. And at 6am 7 is in 1st, with 25 in 3rd. It is usually 5 in first at these times, this is just the last rating periods. The only reason 25s ratings go up at 8 is because they are the only station with local news. This is why I have always thought WBZ could get higher ratings in the morning if they bumped the awful Early Show to TV38 and expanded their local news.

IMO...the thing that's great about Fox 25 is they're LOCAL. For all 4 hours. Unless it's extremely significant, we don't hear about a car accident in Nevada... or an alligator in Florida. They focus on their viewing area for all for hours, as they should. I personally find Fox to be the best Boston morning newscast... because of that reason. The Friday ZipTrips are a plus, too. That being said... I'm sure I'll be clicking back and forth between 5 and 25 a lot during the morning now that Randy's going to be on.

It doesn't matter who's #1 at 5am or 6am. More viewers tune in during second half of the morning block and the spots cost more later in the morning and the frequency of spots is higher too. 25 is winning that game across the board.
