According to today's Inside Track column in the Herald (http://www.bostonherald.com/track/inside_track/view/2009_06_02_New_skies_for_weather_gal_Mish_Michaels/), Mish's contract has not been renewed beyond July.
It's unfortunate, but understandable in this economic climate, that the station cannot continue to employ her in her current role.

Oh, this is a bummer. Mish was always so good and not just with weather. She would explain all kinds of funky weather situations. She will be missed.

That's unfortunate. She will definitely be missed. How could they let Mish go and continue with Barlow?

This is a HUGE loss for BZ in my opinion too.
If you read the article, it says they offered Mish the chief met spot several times, but she turned it down each time.

I loved Mish, I only watched the weather on wbz if she was doing it. Otherwise, I usually watch WBZ news and then turn to 5 for the weather, since they usually both air weather at the same time

Mish was the best in the market. But for some reason the job was never that important to her. Funny, there's no rule that what you're GREAT at--you will love. Its hard for some people to accept but for Mish I think there were always things far more important than TV. I think its widely known that the Chief Met job was hers for the asking....just never interested.

They could dump Barlow and bring in Ed Carroll. Or better yet, poach Wankum from WCVB and make him chief met (to reprise his WLVI role). Wank is the best met in the Boston market.

I agree with dotcomeditor. Put Wankum in the Chief Met job. He will do it justice. Since 56 went out, the anchors, reporters, etc., have been so under utilized at other stations. i.e., Frank Mallicoat at 25.

I agree with the sentiment on Wankum. He's got a great presentation, a great attutude, and the guy gets the forecast right. I think he would be a huge addition to WBZ, for sure. I think a lot of the insiders here are a little hard on Barlow, but I agree that Wankum is better.

WBZ is advertising for a meteorologist/environmental reporter to replace Mish; so perhaps these stories will continue to be a part of the newscast.
In addition, the station is advertising for a traffic reporter. (I like Rich Kirkland and he is quite knowledgeable, but his personality does not fit the current, more successful, morning newscast model).

Are you sure it's not for the evening traffic reports? If it is to replace Rich that's a shame.

Are you sure it's not for the evening traffic reports? If it is to replace Rich that's a shame. Mornings. It's the one area that the 'BZ Morning News really lacks. The flat, dull maps might hopefully be replaced by some sort of graphics system. I really like Triangle Software's Beat the Traffic system (http://www.trianglesoftware.com/3D_mapping.aspx). WCVB is using a chroma key (not sure of the system); WHDH uses Traffic.com's system. It's time for an upgrade.

I can definitely agree with you on that much. Graphically they really need an upgrade, and I'm not even talking exclusively in the traffic dept.
