Nice to dream, isn't it? But there's no way that's happening.

Would love to see Randy Price bump Ed Harding out of the 5 6 and 11pm newscasts. Place Ed on at 5:30 and we are golden. Why put a veteran such as Randy on for the Eyeopener? An *excellent* idea!

Kvn, I think you may have missed the intended irony. Never mind.

My respect for Randy Price increased after he spoke out about the "style over substance" nature of channel 7's news. I think his presence would strengthen WCVB-TV's early morning newscast.

in a time where local tv appears to be struggling, wcvb seems to be making all the right moves. i like harding in the evening an i think the brunner/unruh combo spreads the anchors out in a way that invites viewers for most if not all nights of the week.
adding arguably the most talented male anchor in boston to your morning show, pairing him with a rising star who has good name recognition makes for a dynamite news team.
go 5, and count me in as a viewer for good if this goes through

The thing about this turn of events is that it may disprove the theory of personalities not being "draws" for viewers anymore. If you go over to the General thread, you'll see I've YouTubed the "Beat the Press" discussion involving the 4/25 link-up, and the stories involving Liz and Randy. One of the panellists (I forget whom) makes the point that while putting Liz in the Chronicle timeslot may be a good way of viewers "accidentally" finding her, only doing the show four times a year will likely mean that folks won't know when it's on.
Conversely, with Randy, (and this is my own point now), the May sweeps figures show 5 only 3-5k viewers behind 7 throughout the period, which suggests to me that bringing in an almost universally well-liked broadcaster like Randy could, in and of itself, make the necessary difference to their numbers. There's not many people you can say that about, but reports of the death of the personality-driven local newscast may yet prove premature.

max, i absolutely agree and i think that price could make a difference beyond 3-5k viewers, and here's why: he complements the style at 5. his clear and concise way of delivering the news will gel perfectly with wcvb's no-frills style to the extent that they'll be able to attract a much broader base that appreciates that kind of newscast.

Please keep as far away from 5 as possible. Why in the world would they want to tinker with what they have? Right now they have two knockouts and a cool dude (with good chemistry), what is the benefit of changing that? To many Randy rumpswabs in here!

They may feel that having a weather guy doing news is hurting their credibility with viewers. They used to be #1 by a million miles - now they're not (they WERE 4th) - and Randy's the biggest free agent in town as of the end of this week when his contract with 7 formally expires.
I could accept the reasoning of your analysis more if it wasn't limited to discussing the bodaciousness of their babes, and I think if you actually read what I wrote, you'll soon discover that the "Stop-kissing-Randy's-ass" comeback is old and tired. I respect if you don't personally like him, but media experts far above your pay grade or mine have already checked in with me personally to voice their concurrence with my reasoning, which would be the same if I happened to dislike someone with a similar standing to Randy and they were in this position.

Mr Max, if you think anything I wrote was in response to your comments your gravely mistaken. My response was to the thread in whole. It's not about you all the time.
