I was at WBZ yesterday for a tour which was great and the Tech Director said he thinks in 5 years there wont be a local newscast anywhere! Do you think that will happen?

No. I think that there will be fewer newscasts on fewer stations, but it won't just disappear. Over 500,000 viewers watched the 11pm newscasts last month. There is an appetite for television news in Boston. |

There will always be a place for local TV news, but there's just not the appetite for it that stations would like. In point of fact, stations don't want to add more newscasts...they simply want reliable vehicles to showcase commercials. If they could attract commercial dollars to a test pattern, that's what they would show. My point about local TV news simply being 'glue holding commercials together' is a valid one. The motivation for stations is to show you commercials, not the news. Some insiders might 'take offense' at that characterization, but it's a correct one.

That's why he's the Tech Director. Really?? Do you even know what a technical director does? Try doing a newscast without one or without a director. TV news is a team sport and people who fail to realize that don't stay in the business. |
