Yesterday (Saturday) I tuned in briefly to WBZ 1030 news while I did some about-town errands (OK...the dump). The anchor prefaced a story with this: 'The clock is ticking on the switchover to HDTV." That was bad enough, but worse was that he never corrected himself! The linkage between WBZ radio and WBZ TV ought to be enough so that the story gets communicated properly.

Yeah, a little drastic? lol it's not that big of a deal, and if people aren't prepared for the switch yet, shame on them.

OK, 'appalled' is too strong a word. But why use the term 'HDTV' when they really meant 'Digital?' If the TV stations believe there's a high degree of confusion about the switch (why else would they make the big deal they are out of it?), then referring to the need for 'HDTV' is the worst thing to say to these people. They end up more confused, not less. I was very surprised that the news guy didn't correct himself and say 'Digital' rather than 'HDTV.' One requires a new $7 pair of rabbit ears; the other requires a whole new TV.

You know, I wish that WBZ Newsradio 1030 would get back into the practice of running Christmas music on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. Let's say we could start after the 7 p.m. News with Gary Lapierre playing Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol," then after the 8 p.m. News, they could launch into their "Christmas Gift To You!" They could even simulcast it on all of their sister stations on the FM band.

These days, you know they couldn't do it without saying the whole thing was ' brought to you by Purina Cat Chow' or ' Your New England Ford Dealers.' And that would simply ruin it. But WBZ happily runs itself as a commercial machine. It is so sickening to hear when they DOUBLE-sponsor things (ex: 'Subaru dealers traffic on the threes, brought to you by FiFi's Pet Cemetery.'). That is SO lame. We GET that it's now all about the commercials, but why make it blatantly obvious?

"Appalled" does not seem to me to be too strong a word to use for the fear mongering of the intro. It is the present fashion of "news" outlets to heighten the danger aspect of every story in their headlines. There are many older members of the audience who are not as tech savvy as younger members and the loss of TV service is loss of contact with the world. These doomsday stories of Feb. 17 are actually frightening to some. Anyone lucky enough to have made it into their 70s or 80s knows this and those 50 or so years away from their "Golden Years" may scoff at the difficulty of some to understand what seems simple, obvious to them.

You were able to recall their sponsors; their whole marketing madness paid off, don't ya think?

True, I did remember Gil Santos' Purina Cat Chow spots. But listening to someone drone on for a full minute about CAT FOOD on the radio caused me to: (1) never forget it and (2) never listen to WBZ during weekdays when the unflinching and tedious focus is on commercials. The right of the station is to run them; the right of the listener is to tune out. I'll listen a bit on Saturdays, when the content-to-advertising ratio is bit more favorable to the 'consumer.'

According to the Herald, Gil Santos is done at the end of the month.

What surprises me is how WBZ manages to survive with the majority of its programming, advertising. I for one refuse to be bombarded with commercials.

My iPod is filled with new, free daily Podcasts and that's what I listen to. But radio stations and the people who work for them whine and wail that we're doing that. How DARE we! But as I see it, they've pushed us to it with weak on-air talent and an endless drumbeat of 'Brought to you by...' advertising (and worse). I realize that WBZ isn't a Pro Bono outfit and doing what they do for charity. But by the same token, they've gone WAY overboard with their commercializing money grabs and nauseating Xylophone-infused bank commercials. Ever notice that banks LOVE to use the Xylophone in their jingles?

According to the Herald, Gil Santos is done at the end of the month. Good luck Gil! Listening to the Pats won't be the same without you. No more Gary LaPierre, Tom Cuddy, Gil Santos - WBZ radio has lost some great familiar voices.

Wow. Appalled? Over saying "HDTV" instead of "Digital?" C'mon!
What you should be appalled about is the move away from local programming to homogenous national syndication as evidenced by the recent move to "lay off" Steve Leveille from the overnight broadcast.
CBS has done it. They've destroyed one of America's foremost radio stations. Dan Rey is no David Brudnoy. He is no Paul Sullivan. He is rude, argumentative and one-sided. The new overnight show is as bland and boring as they get.
It's a shame, there's no good radio to listen to overnight at all anymore.
