Every weekday morning, I'd switch from the Today show to WCVB, because the local Eye Opener News Update cut-in started at 7:24 a.m., well before the cut-ins from WBZ and WHDH. Alas, as of this week, WCVB has changed, and is running commercials instead, finally going to news at 7:27. Blink and you'll miss it. Awful. Just awful.

I watch the same segment, but if you notice, Good Morning America used to end their segment at 7:20, well before the other network shows. They are now ending at at least 7:22 if not 7:23. Rather than cut the spot load, it seems Ch. 5 has decided to shorten the news segment, which now usually consists of just the weather and traffic. Could it be that they need some time to move around the number of commercial slots and this is just short term?

I've heard that the change is part of some compromise with the network so that 5 can now do the 4:30 am news slot.

So, to serve a far smaller audience at 4:30 a.m. they are penalizing a far larger audience at 7:24 a.m.? Wow, if ran MY business like that...

Well, I think there is probably enough coverage to go around for everybody! So, I don't think anyone is actually penalized. And I'm not so sure that the total audience possibilities at 4:30 are that far off the segment audience for the several minute long cut-ins. It's a business decision in an era when there certainly isn't a shortage content.
