This is big. I wish them well, but it's going to be tough for them most likely.

I wouldn't call this big at all... I'm pretty sure the 9:00 news on WSBK gets higher ratings than their 5:00 show... They should move it to 6:30 because it seems like they can only get high ratings when they have no competition (after 7:00 in the mornings makes their ratings skyrocket and their 10:00 does so well because they're up against a program that has 12 year old shows as lead ins). I don't know what took them so long to cancel it.

As someone who doesn't work in the industry, would someone tell me why the 5pm broadcast has done so poorly? Is it because the Big 3 stations are so well-established? I actually watched Fox at 5pm regularly and I thought the station did a pretty good job.

I'm not in the industry, I can't tell you why it does poorly but I can tell you why I don't watch. To start off I don't think Mark Ockerbloom is good at all, I was able to sit through a newscast when David Wade was on, and I am able to when Frank Malicoat anchors. Secondly, VB--I think that he is incredibly coservatively biased, he is unprofessional, and he brings nothing to the newscast (especially those video blogs he has that used to air on the evening newscasts, i don't know if they still do them, I would hope not). Third, I don't know why but it doesn't feel local to me. Maybe its because I live right outside of Boston and I know that their studios are all the way down in Dedham (can someone explain that to me, it must me so inconvenient when they are covering stories in Boston), I don't get a local flavor from them, with the exception of the zip trips that they do in the mornings. And the last reason I don't watch is the fact that I don't want to watch a station, adding a viewer to their audiance, that Rupert Murdoch owns.
And as I said earlier, if they did a 6:30 news, they would probably do well as they only do well when they have little/no local news competition.

Fox is my choice most of the time because they stay LOCAL. None of this car crash in Wyoming... alligator in Florida crap. Also- can you explain why Newscenter5 is in Needham... minutes from Fox?

Overcapacity in the local news, too many hours devoted to redundancies

WCVB's studios have been in Needham since the station's inception in 1972. Having grown up in Needham Heights, less than a mile from there, I remember that in the 1960s, that very building was a Caterpillar heavy equipment sales and showroom facility. WFXT, during its own early years was located even closer to WCVB than it is now, just a stone's throw down the street, also in Needham, on Second Ave., just off Highland Ave. The station moved to its current Dedham location several years later, into a bulding that for decades was a General Motors regional training facility.
Regardless of where these stations originate their newscasts, I still will not watch WFXT. As I've written before, I find Maria Stephanos' junior high school valley-girl diction juvenile, and she still insists on yelling; I wish someone would explain to her the purpose of the microphone. Clearly, however, I hold a minority opinion. I'll stick with Lisa Hughes and Heather Unruh, thank you.

This is to fluffernutter regarding Fox's station being "all the way down in Dedham". Where the heck do you think Dedham is?? The Town of Dedham borders Boston on 3 sides, so I think that it is pretty easy to cover any story that happens in the City of Boston. Also, from what I know, Fox 25 is centrally located on Routes 128, Route 1, and seconds to Route 95, I would think they are able to cover any local story easily. Besides that, they are less than 5 miles from the Needham station of WCVB. What is the difference if Channel 5 is in Needham and Fox 25 is in Dedham? But beyond that, what differences does it ever make where a TV station is located. They go where the story is. Personally, I like Fox 25 and am disappointed that they canceled the news a5 5:00 since I get out of work at 4:00 and liked watching the news at 5:00 and then having my dinner. I guess I'll just have to adjust!

It's smart for them to jump into the 6PM race. If things go well, they should knock out TMZ and extend the show until 7 since FOX has no national news broadcast. More people are coming home later and later and that would be the only local news option.
A 12PM show would probably be the next step. They have the capability, just would need the viewers.
FOX needs to get away from the crime/fire reporting and more towards REAL news. Don't waste a live shot in front of a police station. Who cares? If you cover real stories, real news that effects people, maybe the 6PM show and a future noon show would be successful.

If they jumped into midday, it'd be at 11am. Fox has had success with other affiliates broadcasting at that time, so if they were to do anything, it'd be then.
