Don't forget, the 7 News weather anchors do shots where they are shown fully (i.e. standing on the map), so if he backed up, then he would be standing on a 2D map, which would look bad.

There was another video posted with the full weather segment, in which he ducks down at one point, to imply that the shot is too close. He then makes the reference and steps forward.
