If this is true, it's pathetic.
From the Herald:
The best thing they could do is this:
1. Put Gene Lavanchy back to sports (They need a deeper bench) 2. Give Frank Mallicoat the AM show 3. Send Mark Ockerbloom to weekends to anchor solo 4. Pair Maria with Sara Underwood on weeknights to beat 7 at their own dual-female game
I'll update the main site as soon as I can.

Two things in play here : a) onggoing budget squeeze at Fox25. In the eyes of corporate ownership - employees are cost, not an asset. 2) with so much expanded nightly local sports coverage elsewhere - Comcast SportsNet, NECN(via CSN), NESN, 2 two fulltime sports radio stations and on-line destinations(espnboston, boston.com, csn, nesn, etc), there's really no point of investing $$$ into a 4-5 minute highlight sports package every night.

While leftylucy makes some valid points, this is a very disappointing move in the wrong direction. I hope others DON'T follow suit. I actually might have to consider changing my screen name now

Butch was one of the better sportscasters in town. He is also great as a radio host. Knows his stuff, intelligent, polite, but not egotistical (Lobel anyone). I must disagree with considering bringing Lavanchy into the sports department. He is very good in the morning and the chemistry would be hard to reproduce. Good luck to Butch.

I had a chance to meet Butch on one occasion and was flattered when he was the one who actually came up and introduced himself to ME! In the few brief minutes we spent together, he seemed to be an absolute gentleman, so I wish him luck.

None of these will happen. Coprorate initiative is to do more with less talent. Both Ockerboom and Mallicoat are two former sports guys converted into news guys. They'll anchor the sports segment as part of their news co-anchor role. Much like what Bob Halloran does on ch.5 every weekend.

With two main people out in a short amount of time do you think more people will not be getting their contracts renewed?

mallicoat is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated, underexposed people at 25. while i don't know if i'd like him on mornings, i agree he should be on at some point on weekdays. as far as stearns goes, i think he was one of the better sports people. while i understand that asselta probably costs less for the network, it still stinks because we're losing a quality voice in local sports reporting. he'll be missed.
meantime, what will happen to high school fridays, if anything? because usually, asselta does it because he does weekends, so will he be working sunday through thursdays like stearns did? i hope hs fridays is not impacted, because its one of the better ideas they've had. so much traffic to their website, and it definitely helps their ratings on what would otherwise be a slow friday night.

Gene would be a good pm switch hitter sports and news all in one. Fox has way too much talent in the morning ( or deadwood if you will ). Maybe its time to cull the pack. Didnt the helicopter already get downsized ? Maybe just use one studio setting, get big boy to be a little more versatile as well.
