At the risk of sounding sycophantic, three cheers for "the Randy effect!"

I am surprised Jay agreed to it at all.

Two thoughts....
1.) Remember 7News was in trouble well before Leno came to Prime Time.
2.) I know there are a lot of viewers that left 7News after they got rid of Randy.

Jay is tanking everwhere and dragging down Late Night News numbers in every market. Just another thought.... You know, NBC doesn't have to "win" at 10PM. With a much cheaper program, they can probably makes lots of dough anyway.

sp113..
That is EXACTLY the point. NBC CAN win with lower numbers and higher profits. That was precisely ANSIN's original point which I agreed with. The interests of the parent NETWORK and the local AFFILIATE were in major conflict.
What a lot of posters here overlook is this: EVERY network delivers a lousy night or 2 with a lousy 10 PM product, That will always happen, Maybe you'll get really bad luck and get 5 DIFFERENT 10PM Net dogs that will hurt your 11PM News. That can happen,
But THIS time...for the first time I ever remember in Broadcast History--a network said "we're gonna give you ONE SHOW--it will run EVERY NIGHT--and it will run at 10 PM and it will be done ON THE CHEAP".
This is amazing.
And I love these posters who say "well, gee, WHDHs 11 sux anyway". THAT IS NOT THE POINT.
Whether its a #1, #2, or #3 Newscast---it IS SUFFERING INCREMENTALY IN A MAJOR WAY.
The loss of audience hurts REGARDLESS of where you stand in the ratings...duhh.
Read the numbers and it is CLEAR:
Leno's getting killed in all of the top markets...and the nbc affiliates (good AND bad) late news is down DOUBLE DIGITS in every single market.

And the "randy effect" did not cause the NBC affiliates in EACH of the Top 5 Markets to drop DOUBLE DIGITS, ya think???

Honestly if there is a particular station I like, I don't care what precedes it, I'll switch over to it at 11. I really don't get this blaming it on the lead-in, If you REALLY want it, you'll go watch it.
To me it's more of 7 NEEDING a popular lead-in to attract viewers. It appears most of it's viewing area has caught on to it's poor product and has had enough of it.

Thats fine, Fox. I do the same
But the fact that the local NBC affiliates in each of the Top 5 Markets saw their Late Evening news drop double digits with Leno lead-in ---shows that not everyone behaves like us.
Lead in STILL does matter incrementally.
The fact is NBC PROMISED Advertisers LOWER ratings with Leno before the show launched and priced the show accordingly.
yet all of the affiliate GMs just kind of shook it off and resigned themselves to a poor 11 PM Newcast EVERY night. Just don't get it.
NOW GE is unloading the network on to Comcast...so maybe we're seeing just what the whole thing means to NBC afterall. That Network is a 100% mess.

Also, We are judging the Leno show relatively early in the game.
Leno has been up against a lot of premieres with very few re-runs. Most of the year is not like this.
Also, the people that produce Leno will adapt the show according to research. I thin k I stated this earlier...when Leno started he was losing to Letterman.
It took him awhile to get him rhythm...and he'd been Letterman since then.

Here is the excuse 7 has been looking for to blame their piss poor ratings on: www.boston.com/business/articles/2009/10/17/after_strong_start_lenos_falling_ratings_raise_concerns_for_nbc_affiliates/The truth is, they could have ER (in their prime as a #1 show) leading them in and their ratings would still be the same. Look in the mirror 7, it's nobodys fault but your own. "Ted11 wrote: Channel 7 News is painful watch whether it's noon, 6:00 or 11:00. Stories are ripped from the headlines of "People" magazine. Ariel coverage of car accidents...bimbo reporters with IQs of their bust measurements. I don't know if any lead-in show could help them. 10/17/2009 7:21 AM EDT" "duckmano wrote: I watch Leno once in a while. I never watched the NBC show that was on last year. Anyway I agree Channel 7 news is so cheesy. It's awful and that has nothing to do with Leno. 10/17/2009 8:05 AM EDT" "brownrx01 wrote: Its more about WHDH, as alot of people have commented, the WHDH news is and always will be horrible. Those bimbos trying to make everything from A-Z a breaking news story is just too much to watch. Too much drama, too much makeup...maybe if Randy got implants and started talking like Marilyn Monroe they might have kept him..... 10/17/2009 8:34 AM EDT" If anyone wants to read more from 7's fan base: www.boston.com/business/articles/2009/10/17/after_strong_start_lenos_falling_ratings_raise_concerns_for_nbc_affiliates/?comments=all

sp, i agree with your point about reruns; part of the whole appeal of the Leno show is that it WILL win many nights at 10 for NBC- once CBS, ABC and Fox are in reruns. you can watch old episodes of csi practically all day on spike tv, so people will want something new in primetime by the time 10pm comes around.
i see a lot of people eager to say that the idea of the show was a complete failure. Leno's a smart entertainer; he will know how to draw in viewers.
