Just a random thought... ... doesn't it seem that - at some point - there will be just an over-saturation of local news ? Maybe I am short-sighted... or maybe I simply don't care... ( which is highly likely, at this point )
... but, there is only so much LOCAL news to be told at 4, 5, 6 ... 10 and 11 PM. There's only so many times the same local stories can be told... over and over again.
Local news is dying... newspapers like the Globe are dying... the internet and cable are king now. All most folks want from local news - in my highly fallible opinion - are sports scores... and tomorrow's weather.
I could be wrong... but then, I'm among the valid viewing audience that just doesn't care anymore.
Now please excuse me... I'm missing something worthwhile on CNN.

There will be? Honestly from my point of view, theres been an over-saturation of news related shows in the boston area for years already. If anything I say can the 4-5 news on 7, all the noon news, and Fox25 cancel 11.
Sports scores are easier to get on the net, all someone cares about is the weather.
Globe announced they are raising prices, losing subscribers more likely
Is Ed going crazy? Could it eventually be WHDH 7, Boston's news network. As in 24 hour news? no real shows think CNN with a local touch

Newsie, you've got it mostly right.
There is ALREADY a saturation of sorts. There are too many outlets doing the same thing at 5 PM, 6PM, 11PM, etc etc,. whenever WE decide YOU want it
Thats the point.
The end game here includes 2 things for sure--and thats where Ansin IMO is positioning himself (whether he wins or not, and I agree he can be his own worst enemy).
1.) There will be fewer stations doing News (ultimately 1 or 2 sources)
2.) The SURVIVORS will NOT be playing the news-by-appointment format of the past 30 years (6PM, 11PM at the top of the hour)--they will be TRUE 24 hour news sources (and LOCAL LOCAL LOCAL with other programming determined by a LOCAL source--not a New York Suit), on the air all the time and fully interactive, fully integrating TV and the Web.
This is an obvious new paradigm. The Internet is pushing the timetable. We're already IN that era and Boston.com is the fastest growing outlet in town--not because its really very good, because its THERE WHEN THE NEWS CONSUMER WANTS..
Ansin is following Wayne Gretzky's advice when asked how he plays so successfully:
'I skate to where the Puck is GOING...not where it is".

Seeveebee,
Congratulations on making the 500th post on our new site - up-and-running for just three months, which is a far greater volume than in years past!

I was watching the Beat the Press video on page two and I think what Dan Kennedy(I beliee) said that there will probably be a compromise where the 10pm News will be on 7 and the Jay Leno Show will be at 10 on 56. I also think once 7's contract with NBC is up, NBC will move to another station and so they don't deal with the Ed Ansin headache anymore.

Local news has a brighter future than many of the national outlets...the appetite is for local info...its what sets locals apart from the rest of the dial. Count the households watching the 11.

My crystal ball shows local news on Channel 7 at 10:00 P.M. and NBC programming on WLVI at that hour.

seeveebee, i understand what your saying with the fact that the schedule of the stations will change in years to come, because they simply have to if they want to survive in this market. those who don't, as you say, will not surivive.
but going off a point that newsie made, i really think the content MUST change, else people WILL start tuning into CNN and FNC for their news, because those channels run analysis as well. with local news, there are only so many times we can here essentially the same story at 5, 6, 10 and 11 before we get tired of it. the stations have to change the content to keep viewers interested.
ansin is moving in the direction of the constant local news, and he's encountered the problem of how to make it entertaining. his solution is to provide the viewer with silly stories that have no effect on our lives.
while these are entertaining (to an extent), there have two problems: (1) they eliminate the station's credibility and (2) they're not substantive enough for the average viewer. give us some analysis, some interviews, some opinion. and i don't mean the cheesy kind.
changing the set up of the news schedule is one thing; the more difficult task is changing the content to keep us interested AND informed.

Did anyone happen to notice the revamped 4 and 5pm intros that were sprinkled in yesterday? Guess what's missing? The NBC logo... hmmmm..

Tmac, I agree with every point you made 100%. There is absolutely no disagreement whatsoever on every point you made.
You're right the Content MUST get MUCH better. Even MORE so at WHDH. But I think my post defines the DIRECTION of where we're clearly heading.
YOUR post clearly outlines the crucial obstacles and objectives and big changes that are necessary for this whole game of TV to SUCCEED.
EXCELLENT post.

Dont see any peacock on their web site either? Nope. It's there on the banner next to Kim/Frances and Pete on the weather page.
