Ansin Opts Not To Play Leno at 10pm, Instead 1.5 hours of News starting at 10pm on WHDH
http://www.boston.com/business/ticker/2009/04/channel_7_no_le.html

Alright. Let me get this straight. Jay Leno, who has only brought ratings to the network, is now the LEAD-IN to the 11pm news...and Ed Ansin is saying "nah"?

If NBC gets pissed off enough, they'll buy a station and make WHDH try to steal the "My Network TV" affiliation from Al Kaprielian. Seriously...I cannot believe my eyes.

And a SIMULCAST!? Of all things, a freakin' simulcast. Wow.

I called this a while ago...when Randy left...it's all over. He was the support beam that held the roof up.

This is a very bizarre situaton... I wonder if 7 is trying to get out of their contract with NBC by doing this?

In the article NBC says they could strip 7 on their NBC affiliation! Do you think that will happen??

IDK. But personally, I highly doubt it. I have a feeling they will change their mind and come to some sort of agreement.

its clear that new york has never had the best relationship with ansin, but i never thought it would lead to anything. that said, this tension seems to be coming out of nowhere, so maybe there's something going on behind the scenes we don't know about.
...just a theory...

If WHDH is TRYING to get out of their contract with NBC...then they are likely TRYING to go bankrupt. Because a CW/Independent duopoly with a newsroom will not exist longer than a month.

Eek.

I'm pretty sure within a month they will "come to an agreement". I doubt this will end in an affiliation yanking, but still...I've been shocked before.

It just makes them look like total morons because they announced it on-air already! Next time, 7-heads, clear up your legal/bureaucratic crap before you advertise your stupidity that otherwise wouldn't be apparent for another six months!

I hate to disagree with you guys, but Ansin is making a GREAT call:

a.) NEWS at 10 would be SUBSTANTIALLY more profitable than Leno. (no one is positive on the Leno ratings prospect, and the Leno move is universally viewed as a Budget driven cheap way to fill air time for NBC).

b.) Leno's expected lousy talk shoiw ratings would be TOXIC lead in to the 11 Pm news--which is already suffering from dreadful lead-in.

c.) Doing an Hour of local news in late prime time could DRIVE WHDH'S image in the market as THE news station.

d.) WHDH would bring in FAR more revenue with an extra Hour's worth of Ad Inventory.

Importantly-NBC HAS NOWHERE TO GO.

Ansin is as Cut Throat as they come in---and he knows the Poker hand he's been dealt. He will use EVERY OUNCE of whatever leverage he has. He knows NBC, BY FAR the suckiest Network--has NOWHERE TO GO. WCVB and WBZ and OBVIOUSLY FOX are locked in to Contracts.

So if you're NBC--please show me the branded NewsRooms in Boston where you can take your Product???? And remember, GE just said Local News is dead and they're scaling back/out of the business.

Ansin is putting all the pieces here and pulling a fast one. One he can win with.,

seeveebee your points are right on the mark.... if 7 can do this watch other affiliates will follow. Leno's ratings are going to be a disaster...

I'm gonna go with NBC on this one. If 10 p.m. is such a lucrative time slot for news, wouldn't 7 have already figured out how to do better in that time slot since they are already on then with news and have a fraction of the Fox 25 audience. Remove the Idol and other lead in factors and you how a a much bigger and established news product(7) going up against 25 on a lot of very average nights and 7 hasn't done much, especially when you take a look at their content down below the first two segments. Then, let's see this theory as a partnership... and it has been a very lucrative one for 7 thanks to NBC: 7 actually thinks they are going to do well enough at 10 ... with, let's see ... the NBC leadin! And then, they want to trash the NBC game by eliminating what has been the most popular late night show(when less viewers are available at 11:35). The integrity is obvious and the arrogance of presumption is pretty laughable. If you think that Leno's rating are going to be less than a newscast on 7, competing against the "newer and better 7"(Fox 25), think again. Rest assured that the Fox people are hoping it goes this way. Less "other" competition and they already do better than 7 as news competition. If NBC pulls the plug, it'll be a total disaster for 7. Weak though NBC is, they do bring a lot to the table. And yes, they do have licensing options. It wouldn't be good for them, but they do have options.

WBZ has posted a story about this...
http://wbztv.com/entertainment/jay.leno.channel.2.974972.html

It's also AOL's top story on their entertainment page right now. This is getting alot of attention the question is who will call who's bluff.

You nailed it, especially on b).

NBC is the one that is dismantling its programming. They're plugging Leno into 10pm hour five nights a week. Insane. This is the same idiotic oversell they pulled with Dateline and Howie Mandell during their initial successes.

Plus, Leno is a magnet for older demos which conflits with Ansin's overall strategy of conquering younger viewers. If you think NBC is bad lead-in for 7 and other affils right now, wait till Leno arrives in Septemebr. If NBC had installed O'Brien in the 10pm slot instead of Leno, Ansin would have never forced NBC's hand which what he's doing now.

They'll settle it somehow. Wait and watch.
Leno will probably air on tape-delay on 7 after Jimmy or at 10pm on CW56. NBC has limitted options which are not worth the gamble.

This certainly isn't a response to a cry for 'more news' from the viewing public. No. It's clearly and solely a revenue grab by WHDH, because they want a vehicle that can deliver advertising dollars only to them...not split with the Peacock. That vehicle is called a 'newscast,' and it is laughable that WHDH is in such dire financial straits that they need to make such a selfish money grab.

We're breathlessly waiting for the chance to wade through nineteen car commercials and 22 furniture store commercials only to hear some dweeb reporter on a street corner telling us that 'Officials aren't commenting and there's no word yet on a cause.'

Please.

Thanks cj and brighton.

Ansin holds all the cards in this dispute. Look, the Network/affiliate model is completely broken (the Nets AND the Locals would not argue for a moment with that premise).

What we are watching here is the beginning of the process of busting/amending this relationship,. It WOULD HAVE HAPPENED SOON ANYWAY.

Most local afffiliates are sheep. Ansin--however reprehensible he may be--has no problem doing what is in HIS and HIS STATION'S best interests. And make no mistake-- WHDH will both a.) preserve and enhance its bread and butter News Franhise...and b.) make a TON more money than NBC's cheap filler programming aT 10 pm

This is A BRILLIANT STROKE. The cat is out of the bag. And the antiquated affiiate/net relationship is forever changed starting today.

Message from the affilates: "nets--if you deliver garbage in OUR most important day part--for many years--as NBC has done---the s---- will hit the fan...and you can't broadast on our channel with cheap filler".

Just like a lousy employee--you'll get cut.

OK, Jeff Immelt---after just 2 weeks ago telling the world how ROTTEN local news is...and how you to plan to scale out of it---and how WONDERFUL your network is---WHAT IS YOUR REPLY?? Ball is in YOUR court now.

Ansin just called your bluff. Wonder what your O AND O'S--whose budgets you JUST SLASHED --will think now????

This is SO good. Secretly every local GM in the country is saying "go get -em Ansin!!!" So THEY can follow
